Safaree has admitted that he had a hard time dealing with Nicki Minaj moving on from him and dating Meek Mill afterwards.

During a conversation with the We in Miami podcast, Safaree opened up about breaking up with Nicki and how he went through a dark period. According to Safaree, Nicki's fanbase and others felt he no longer mattered yet he still pushed through all the negativity.

"I'm not even gonna sugarcoat shit. I was with Nicki, we broke up. Her fans and certain people they just wanted it to be like, 'OK they not together no more. Fuck him, let it be nothing," said Safaree. "Let him disintegrate, let him disappear, whatever. But nine, 10 years later—10, 15 TV shows later. Lot of music out later. Doors up later—I'm still here. Some people don't like that. They're like, 'Damn, why are n***as still paying attention to this n***a?"

Safaree added that because Nicki was dating another high-profile celebrity in Meek, it was hard to deal with all of the buzz from the relationship, and he also found himself in a beef with the "Dreams and Nightmares" rapper.

"When me and Nicki first broke up and she got with Meek and they were like the biggest in the world and we was all beefing and shit," he said. "You gotta think about I had two of the biggest people in the world against me. That meant everybody would be against me. So nobody wanted to be next to me. Nobody wanted to work with me or none of that shit. So it just made everything hard, and that shit, that was a dark time for me."

Safaree had dated Nicki for 14 years before she left him to be with Meek. Safaree had once claimed Nicki had started seeing Meek before the breakup, and that led to Safaree getting jumped by members of the Dreamchasers crew.

Safaree's ex-wife, Erica Mena, wasn't too happy that he claimed the darkest part of his life was the breakup with Nicki. Mena hopped into the comment section of TheShadeRoom's Instagram post of his take on the breakup and bashed him for being an alleged deadbeat father. Safaree shares two children with Mena, Safire, 4, and Legend, 3; however, she filed for divorce in 2021.

"I will FOREVER be embarrassed I gave sis these incredible beautiful babies. He don't even talk or care about his seeds this much online or in real life," she wrote. "Hopefully sis can end his dead beat struggle next."
